Meet Chris Dixon – Writer, Waterman, Storyteller

Chris Dixon is a journalist whose writing has appeared in The New York Times, Garden & Gun, Outside, Popular Mechanics, Men’s Journal, and The Surfer’s Journal. His work spans surf culture, adventure, craftsmanship, and the soulful side of the American South.

He served as a senior writer and was the founding online editor of Surfer magazine. His voice helped shape the early digital era of surf journalism.

Books That Dive Deep

Chris is the author of two celebrated books:
📘 Ghost Wave: The True Story of the Biggest Wave on Earth and the Men Who Challenged It
📗 The Ocean: The Ultimate Handbook of Nautical Knowledge

He has also contributed to a range of bestselling titles and anthologies, including:
– Surfing: 1778–Today (Taschen)
– The Southerner’s Handbook (New York Times Bestseller)
– 36 Hours: 150 Weekends in the USA & Canada (The New York Times)
– The Big Juice: Epic Tales of Big Wave Surfing

Rooted in the Coast

Chris grew up on the shores of South Carolina and Georgia. His early years were filled with boating, fishing, and surfing—an upbringing that still fuels his writing today.

At one point, he even spent a year working and traveling with Jimmy Buffett. That adventure added another layer to his connection with ocean life and storytelling.

Now based in Charleston, South Carolina, Chris lives with his wife, son, and daughter. He continues to surf, explore, and write stories that connect readers to the sea—and to each other.
