Peter Vey
Peter Vey is a Key West–based contemporary artist whose work captures the light, movement, and unmistakable spirit of the Florida Keys. Often described as a “laureate of tropical light,” his paintings transform everyday island scenes—weathered conch houses, mangrove-lined shores, and wind-filled sails—into compositions that pulse with color and life.
Working with thick palette strokes and an energetic, almost rhythmic tempo, Vey’s style bridges American Regionalism with Abstract Expressionist influence—placing him in conversation with artists like Winslow Homer while offering a distinctly modern, coastal perspective.
His work is deeply rooted in place, shaped by the shifting light of the tropics and the layered textures of Old Town Key West. As one gallery director noted, Vey doesn’t simply paint the island—he “translates its emotional frequency,” capturing not just what Key West looks like, but what it feels like.
At the heart of his work is a clear philosophy:
“I like to celebrate life. That’s important to me.”
That celebration is evident in every piece—bold, expressive, and unmistakably tied to the rhythm of island living. Collected by visitors and locals alike, Peter Vey’s paintings bring a refined yet joyful sense of Key West into any space.
